"WHAT THE WORD TRANSMITS THROUGH THE EAR, THE PAINTING SILENTLY SHOWS THROUGH THE IMAGE, AND BY THESE TWO MEANS, MUTUALLY ACCOMPANYING ONE ANOTHER...WE RECEIVE KNOWLEDGE OF ONE AND THE SAME THING."
- ST. BASIL
Joyce Virginia Rossy specializes in hand written icons of classic Byzantine style.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Ms.Rossy has studied art at Sir George Williams University and been painting as a hobby for many years. Her formal training began under the direction of Alexandr e Sobolev, a well known Russian iconographer and continued with Phillip Zimmerman, a noted American iconographer.
In 2006, Ms. Rossy's personal devotion to iconography culminated in a trip to Russia, where specially arranged private tours, workshops and discussions of techniques with Russian iconographers was experienced. The treasure-trove of old Russian icons at the Tret Yakov State Gallery in Moscow, the Museum of Ivan Golikov (including his workshop), the Icon School of Art in Yavo s lavi, and the Muken Art Workshop were all undeniably life-changing for an artist, and had a great impact on her evolving body of work.
The Holy Fathers teach us that iconography is a mystery of the Orthodox Church. Ms. Rossy takes a humble approach to this holy workand prays that this attitude is re ected in her iconography. If you are conside ring commissioning a hand-painted Byzantine icon, do so with faith in owning an important part of the Christian lifestyle. Although icons are thought of as windows into heaven, we must remember that they are also windows used in which those in heaven see us.
